Marks and Spencer Home Energy Service Division

Marks and Spencer announced in feb.2010 that it was launching a brand new Home Energy Service division that would offer customers a suite of energy efficiency products and services.

Building on the success of M&S Energy, which launched just over a year ago and is already servicing over 125,000 homes, M&S will roll-out a number of new products including bespoke energy advice, renewable energy solutions such as solar panels & heat pumps, and energy efficient heating solutions over the coming months.

The first new service, M&S Energy Home Insulation, will launch this week, with prices starting from £149 for loft insulation and the same price for cavity wall insulation. Insulation makes homes more energy efficient and reduces carbon dioxide emissions – one of the biggest causes of climate change.

Free Home Insulation for M&S Employees

To kick-start the drive to encourage home insulation, M&S is offering free loft or cavity wall insulation to all its employees as part of its ongoing Plan A environmental commitments. The company will also pay the benefit in kind tax to encourage employees to take-part.

If all qualifying employees take up the offer, M&S will insulate over 30,000 homes for free. This would lead to an annual saving of around 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of taking over 4,100 cars off the roads for a year or more than 165,000 cars over a lifetime.

Richard Gillies, Director of Plan A, says: “We hope to create 30,000 green M&S ambassadors by offering this energy efficient solution free of charge to our employees. It will produce a significant cut in their carbon emissions, cut their energy bills and, we believe, inspire them to become advocates for energy efficiency.”

Major Savings for Customers

Insulating a home doesn’t just make it more energy efficient – reducing energy consumption can also lead to significant savings.

Insulating a loft without any existing insulation can save the average homeowner £150 a year on heating bills and 800kg in CO2 emissions– the equivalent of driving from London to Glasgow and back three times. Topping up existing insulation could save £45 a year.

Cavity wall insulation can save the average householder around £115 per year on heating bills and 610kg in CO2 emissions. If everyone in the UK installs cavity wall insulation, we would cut CO2 emissions by nearly four million tonnes – enough CO2 to fill over 22 million double-decker buses or Wembley stadium 500 times.

Stephen Langford, Head of M&S Energy, says: “Marks & Spencer is committed to making it easy and cost effective for our customers and employees to reduce their carbon footprint. Insulating your home saves you money and helps in the fight against climate change, a genuine win-win situation. We’ve launched a service that takes the hassle factor out of home insulation and applies M&S standards of quality, value and customer service.

“We will select the best installers, deliver the best lead times and customers will pay M&S, not the installer. It will also be a bespoke service and customers will deal with an M&S advisor that will manage the whole journey from enquiry through to installation.”

How the home insulation service works

Customers call a 0800 telephone number to register interest and within seven working days their property is assessed free of charge. If a customer chooses to progress, an appointment is booked with an installer and the work is carried out within eight weeks. Installation times vary, but generally are less than half-a-day, and the cavity wall insulation is guaranteed for 25 years. Loft insulation lasts indefinitely given the correct conditions.

M&S Customers can find out more at www.mandsenergy.com or call 0800 0106 106 from Monday.

Marks and Spencer Energy is a partnership between M&S and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) that supplies electricity and gas to domestic customers and rewards them with M&S store vouchers for helping the environment by reducing their energy usage.

  • £20 M&S voucher when you sign up for both electricity and gas (or a £10 M&S voucher if you sign up for electricity only)
  • £10 M&S voucher if you choose the environmentally friendlier option of paperless billing (or a £5 M&S voucher if you are an electricity only customer)
  • £10 M&S voucher for each complete 12 month period you're with M&S Energy (or a £5 M&S voucher if you are an electricity only customer) M&S has chosen Scottish and Southern Energy as its energy partner because they deliver award-winning customer service and champion environmental responsibility. They will also be matching M&S Energy customers' electricity consumption with the equivalent level of electricity from renewable sources.

Customers will also receive M&S vouchers on signing-up and on anniversaries in recognition of their loyalty. M&S Energy is sold exclusively through M&S stores and at www.mandsenergy.com
